The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s negotiated International Monetary Fund (IMF) contract, according to the member of parliament for North Tongu, is the worst in the nation’s history.
He criticized the administration for conducting what he called very dishonest and bad-faith discussions for the US$3 billion bailout.
He called the IMF deal’s negotiating team and the finance minister “very wicked people.”
The program, as negotiated, will make life more difficult for the average Ghanaian, he claimed, adding that “this is going to be the most painful and bitter IMF programme ever.”
“…I wonder who negotiated such a poor bargain on behalf of the honorable Ghanaians. He questioned, “Does this person have a heart? Does he care about Ghanaians?”
According to Mr. Ablakwa’s study of the bailout so far, there will be 50 additional tax measures as a result of the bailout.
And there will also be a quarterly tariff adjustment, which will result in higher electricity prices every three months. “Can you believe that, every quarter,” he said.
He noted that the IMF agreement as it currently exists also includes an additional debt restructuring program that will trouble people and businesses, as well as a three-year hiring freeze in the public sector.
