The Accra Circuit Court remanded Kwame Baffoe, often referred to as Abronye, into police custody after his arraignment on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Following his detention on accusations of provocative conduct conducive to the breach of peace, the vocal Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was charged with arraignment.

Abronye was placed under police arrest and ordered to reappear on Friday, September 12, 2025, by the judge overseeing the case.

The decision was made to allow for additional investigations into the situation, the Ghana Police Service announced in a statement.

Abronye’s legal team had previously expressed concern after his incarceration after being refused access to their client and asserting that it was unknown where he was.

Daniel Martey, Esq., of Nkrumah & Associates, his attorney, called the case’s conduct “very unprofessional,” claiming that Abronye was transferred between offices without giving enough warning.

The most recent court ruling follows the disclosure that, only days before his detention, Abronye had submitted an application for political asylum overseas.

He formally petitioned a number of foreign embassies, including those of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as United Nations organizations, in a letter dated September 5, 2025.

He listed threats to his life, illegal arrests, and political persecution as the primary causes of his asylum requests outside of Ghana.

Since then, civil society has responded, with IMANI Africa President Franklin Cudjoe urging the Inspector General of Police to look into the claimed threats that Abronye mentioned in his asylum applications.
