After hours of intense rain on this Thursday morning, business operations in the Greater Accra Region ceased.
Flood waters severely hampered traffic on the key Tema-Aflao N1 route at the Kpone Barrier section.
Some drivers and their passengers lamented the two to five hours they spent stuck in traffic before finding a way out. The route in front of the Bel-Acqua Bottling Company was obstructed by the floods, forcing commuters to practically navigate through flowing water.
The main Accra-Tema Motorway did not fare any better, as the significant bottleneck caused by the rains made it so that traffic moved at a crawl.
While some drivers who risked the floods had their vehicles break down, a handful of vehicles with very low clearance had to be parked until the floods subsided. Many claimed that if it had rained for many hours, the situation may have been quite bad.
At the root of the flooding are recent building projects and human activities, such as the construction of structures in areas where runoff water once collected.
