Accra, the capital of Ghana, has been ranked among the world’s top nightlife destinations, earning the 18th position on Time Out’s latest list of the World’s Best Cities for Nightlife.
The ranking places Accra among the top 20 nightlife cities globally and makes it one of only two African cities featured on the list. Johannesburg, South Africa, performed even better, securing the seventh position.
Time Out’s annual nightlife ranking was based on feedback from more than 24,000 residents across cities worldwide, combined with assessments from the publication’s city editors, culture experts and nightlife specialists.
Cities were assessed based on factors such as nightlife quality, affordability, music and entertainment, safety, diversity, community, excitement and hospitality.
Accra Nightlife Praised for Community and Hospitality
According to the survey, one of Accra’s strongest nightlife attributes is its welcoming social atmosphere and sense of community.
About 75% of locals surveyed said they find it easy to experience genuine connection and community while enjoying Accra after dark. The finding highlights the role of music, food, parties and cultural activities in bringing people together.
Accra also recorded strong scores for friendliness, with 65% of respondents describing the city’s nightlife culture as exceptionally friendly and approachable.
This further strengthens Ghana’s capital city’s reputation for hospitality and welcoming visitors, including tourists and members of the Ghanaian diaspora.
Accra Nightlife Considered Affordable
Affordability was another key factor behind Accra’s strong ranking.
Approximately 62% of respondents rated nightlife in Accra as highly affordable. This makes the Ghanaian capital an attractive destination for residents and international travellers seeking quality entertainment, restaurants, bars, clubs and nightlife experiences without excessive spending.
Meanwhile, 56% of respondents gave top ratings to the quality of Accra’s events and music, reflecting the city’s expanding influence on the international entertainment scene.
Osu Remains a Major Accra Nightlife Hub
Accra’s nightlife has long been associated with Osu, one of the capital’s most popular entertainment districts.
Well-known establishments such as Bloom Bar, The Republic Bar & Grill and Purple Pub have contributed to Osu’s reputation as a major nightlife destination for locals, tourists and members of the diaspora.
However, Accra’s entertainment industry has expanded beyond Osu in recent years.
Neighbourhoods including East Legon and Cantonments have developed into major nightlife centres, offering a growing range of premium clubs, lounges, restaurants and bars.
Venues such as MAD CLUB and Enzo Accra have also contributed to the growth of a more upscale nightlife experience in the capital.
Afrobeats and Alternative Music Shape Accra Nightlife
Time Out also highlighted the evolution of Accra’s music and nightlife culture.
Although the city remains strongly connected to Afrobeats, its entertainment scene is increasingly embracing alternative sounds and emerging subcultures.
Genres and experiences such as electronic music, alté and 1990s R&B-themed events are gaining popularity, providing greater musical diversity for different age groups and audiences.
The growing variety has helped make Accra’s nightlife appealing to people with different musical tastes and entertainment preferences.
Accra Enters Global Top 20 Nightlife Cities
Accra’s 18th-place position demonstrates that the city’s appeal extends beyond its growing number of bars, clubs and entertainment venues.
The ranking recognises Accra’s vibrant social culture, affordable nightlife, hospitality, music scene, entertainment industry and international tourism appeal.
