The Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area in the Greater Accra area, Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, has led a delegation of chiefs to meet with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in an effort to find a long-term solution to the Songor Lagoon disturbances.
The chiefs assert that they desire high levels of security in the region to deter those who participate in unauthorized salt mining.
According to the chiefs, the private company that has been granted a concession to mine salt in the area is experiencing a delay in its work due to illicit mining activities on the lagoon.
On Friday, June 9, 2023, Asafoatse Ngua Kotoko Dabra V, the Divisional Chief of Kabiawe Kponor at Ada in the Greater Accra Region, appeared on the Ghana Yensom morning program hosted by Odeyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM to announce the decision of the traditional leaders to request strict security from the president in order to combat illegal mining.
In order to enable the private enterprise develop the lagoon for the benefit of the populace, he remarked that it is time to provide security.
He claimed that since private companies have emerged, they have been able to build community pans for those who want to mine salt properly.
Now, he explained, “people must wait for the brine water to flow into pans and form salt.”
He claimed that the communal pans, rather than the illicit mining practiced by some unscrupulous people, are the best option.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) were advised not to enter the Ada Songor Lagoon concession.
The founding of Electrochem Ghana Limited (EGL) was hailed as good news by the traditional leaders who expressed optimism for some kind of progress in Ada.
They claim that the company’s operations will result in numerous job opportunities for young people in the area.
The traditional chiefs are certain that because soft loans will be provided to them for economic activity, women will not be left out.
