Sammy Gyamfi, the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), has filed a defamation lawsuit against media personality Afia Schwarzenegger, whose real name is Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa.
The plaintiff, represented by Sustineri Attorneys PRUC, filed a Statement of Claim at an Accra High Court on Wednesday, July 23. The plaintiff requests a number of reliefs, including a declaration that the statements in the TikTok video are defamatory, GH₵10 million in general and exemplary damages, and a permanent injunction to prevent the defendant from publishing any more defamatory content.
The court-translated defamatory allegations, which were made in Asante Twi, accuse Mr. Gyamfi of having extramarital affairs and lavishly spending money on anonymous female University of Ghana students.
Afia Schwarzenegger says she has a “list” of women Mr. Gyamfi supposedly buys automobiles for and tries to connect his wife’s family to mysterious wealth accumulation in the US, especially a mansion his wife’s younger sister bought.
“Tell Sammy Gyamfi’s wife that I am greeting her. Her husband is still buying cars for girls in Legon… Even his wife’s younger sister has bought a house in the US,” the viral TikTok video claimed.
The complainant argues that these claims are not only untrue and unsupported but also intended to harm his reputation, particularly considering his notoriety as a lawyer and political figure.
Sammy Gyamfi requests the following from the court:
- A declaration that the publication is defamatory;
- General damages for defamation;
- Exemplary damages of GH₵ 10 million;
- A perpetual injunction restraining further publication of the same or similar content;
- A public retraction and apology to be published on the front and back pages of The Daily Graphic for three consecutive editions, as well as on TikTok and any other platforms where the publication was made;
- Legal costs, including counsel’s fees.
