Akufo-Addo speaks to the UN Security Council in New York after attending the COP 27 Summit in Egypt.

On Saturday, November 5, 2022, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo left Ghana to represent Ghana in the delegation to the World Leaders’ Summit of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP 27), which will be held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will bring parties together at the COP 27 Summit, one of the biggest gatherings of world leaders, to accelerate efforts toward the goals of the Paris agreement.

The president will make a statement outlining Ghana’s stance on climate change and the steps taken to mitigate the threat it poses. Additionally, he will participate in the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Summit, which is taking place in conjunction with COP 27, and make five (5) different speeches on the efforts Ghana is making to safeguard its forests and oceans, on sustainable energy, and on the energy transition.

As part of the agenda for Ghana’s Presidency of the Council for the month of November 2022, President Akufo-Addo will preside over the High-Level UN Security Council debate in New York on November 10, 2022.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchey, the Minister for Energy, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP; the Ministers for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie and Samuel A. Jinapor, MP; the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, MP; and representatives from the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry were present with the President.

On Friday, November 11, 2022, the President will return to Ghana. In his absence, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, will act in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution.
