According to Regional Minister Hafiz Bin Salih, 33,868 pupils in the Upper West Region have benefited from the government’s flagship Free Senior High School program.

Speaking to reporters at the State of the Region Report, a venue for regional ministers to update the media on events in their areas, Dr. Salih credited President Akufo-visionary Addo’s leadership for ensuring that all people could access education for the rise in secondary school enrollment in his region.

All 35 public SHS/SHTS/TVET schools in the region were enrolled in the Free SHS program upon its inception in 2017. 33,868 pupils in the area have profited from the initiative thus far, he claimed.

Although the lack of adequate infrastructure in the area was a problem when the program was first introduced in 2017, he claimed that the government, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has completed 33 new educational projects and is currently building 11 facilities in various parts of the region.

“In addition, the GETFund has constructed 33 new infrastructure facilities since 2017 and is working on 11 more. Among these projects are dorms, classrooms, science labs, administrative blocks, and accommodations, among others,” he continued.

The minister also stated that 52 further stalled GETFund projects in the area are the subject of intense effort.

The Hilla Limann Technical University, several senior high schools, and elementary schools spread around the region are among these initiatives, according to him. They also include some crucial infrastructure.
