The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced with deep sorrow the death of a Ghanaian returnee from South Africa shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport.
The deceased, who was among Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa under the government’s repatriation exercise, died at the Emergency Medical Reception Unit at the Accra International Airport at about 6:55 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arrangements are underway to formally notify the deceased person’s family. The remains have also been transferred to the Police Hospital, where an autopsy will be conducted to establish the cause of death.
The deceased was part of a group of 50 Ghanaian evacuees who arrived in Ghana at approximately 5:50 p.m. aboard an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa.
The government’s evacuation exercise was aimed at facilitating the safe return of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa. Authorities say the necessary procedures are being followed following the tragic death at the airport.
