The government is preparing to establish a committee to determine compensation packages for victims of the La Pleasure Beach demolition in Accra.
La Dadekotopon Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, disclosed this when she appeared before Parliament’s Local Government and Rural Development Committee.
According to the MP, authorities have completed the compilation of details of people affected by the demolition to support the compensation process. She said the committee is expected to be constituted by early next week.
Sowah explained that the committee will assess the circumstances of affected individuals and determine the appropriate form of compensation. She added that the final compensation package has not yet been approved.
The Deputy Minister assured affected residents, vendors and businesses that she would continue engaging with the relevant authorities to ensure that eligible victims receive the compensation due to them.
La Pleasure Beach Demolition in Accra
The compensation discussions follow the demolition of structures around the La Beach area of Accra, including facilities at La Pleasure Beach and the Polo Beach Club near the Labadi Beach Hotel.
Personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, with support from the Ghana Police Service, supervised the demolition exercise.
Vendors and businesses operating within the affected area were directed to leave the premises as the authorities carried out the exercise.
NDC Raises Concerns Over La Beach Demolition
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the La Dadekotopon Constituency has expressed concerns about the demolition, saying it was surprised by the exercise.
The constituency branch stated that preliminary consultations suggested the affected area was not included in any demolition plan associated with the Labadi Beach Hotel.
The government’s planned compensation committee is therefore expected to assess the claims of affected persons and make recommendations on the appropriate La Pleasure Beach demolition compensation.
The development has increased calls for transparency, stakeholder engagement and fair compensation for individuals and businesses affected by the demolition exercise.
