The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has commenced a three-day capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing members’ oversight responsibilities and improving legislative effectiveness within Ghana’s education sector.
The training programme is designed to equip committee members with the knowledge and skills needed to strengthen accountability, promote education reforms, and support the effective implementation of national education policies.
Education Committee Focuses on Oversight and Legislative Responsibilities
The programme, chaired by Hon. Peter Nortsu-Kotoe Kwasi, began with intensive sessions covering the Committee’s constitutional and statutory mandate, the legal and regulatory framework governing education in Ghana, proposed legislative amendments, and principles of ethical leadership in parliamentary governance.
Participants also engaged in practical discussions on Parliamentary procedures, disclosure obligations, recusal requirements, and policy reforms aimed at improving the quality of education across the country.
Strengthening Accountability in Ghana’s Education Sector
A major objective of the capacity-building workshop is to reinforce accountability within Ghana’s education system by ensuring that public institutions and government agencies respond promptly to Parliamentary invitations and appear before the Committee whenever required.
The initiative is expected to enhance parliamentary oversight of education policies, public spending, and the performance of agencies operating under the Ministry of Education.
Former Education Minister Shares Policy Experience
The Ranking Member of the Committee and former Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, shared valuable insights from his tenure, highlighting practical strategies the Committee can adopt to support better learning outcomes and strengthen Ghana’s education system.
He encouraged members to use effective oversight and constructive engagement with stakeholders to drive policy implementation, improve educational standards, and address challenges affecting schools and tertiary institutions.
Three-Day Training Runs Until August 5
The capacity-building programme, scheduled from August 3 to August 5, 2026, forms part of Parliament’s efforts to strengthen governance, improve legislative performance, and ensure greater accountability in Ghana’s education sector.
The initiative is expected to better position the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to monitor education policies, review legislation, and contribute to reforms that support quality education and sustainable national development.
