Following an incredible 16-year term, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia the reins of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Since 2007, President Akufo-Addo has served as the head of the party. Following his success in the presidential primary, Dr. Bawumia becomes the new head of the NPP in accordance with its constitution.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, President Akufo-Addo pledged to make sure Dr. Bawumia wins the presidency in the 2024 elections at his handover speech at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He conveyed appreciation to the party for entrusting him with its affairs for sixteen years and expressed hope for Dr. Bawumia’s capacity to bring the party together.

An important turning point was Dr. Bawumia’s election as the NPP’s flagbearer after the party’s presidential primaries.

With 61.43% of the vote, he won handily, whereas Kennedy Agyapong, his nearest opponent, only received 37.41% of the vote. Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo, the other two candidates, received 0.75% and 0.41% of the vote, respectively.

The significance of the NPP primaries as they gear up for the general elections of 2024 is highlighted by the participation of around 200,000 delegates from all throughout the nation.

With Dr. Bawumia emerging as the flagbearer, the stage is set for the NPP’s election campaign. In the 2024 elections, he will go up against some very tough competition, including flagbearers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, and Alan Kyerematen.

This result opens the door for a fiercely contested presidential field of contenders.
