The country’s boxing activities have been suspended by the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect.

The decision, which was made after boxer Ernest Oko Akushey, better known by his stage name Bahubali, passed away tragically, was made after consulting with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Eleven days had passed since Bahubali’s crushing loss to Jacob Dickson in a super middleweight match at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

Even though the cause of death has not been determined, many believe it may have something to do with the punches he took in the ring when he lost to Dickson on Friday, September 12, 2025.

The NSA claims that the sector ministry’s decision to “prioritise the safety, health, and welfare of athletes” is reflected in the decision to halt all boxing activity.

The NSA and Ministry, along with important boxing players, had completed preparations to execute the Ministerial Committee on Boxing’s recommendations before this regrettable tragedy, according to a press release dated September 25, 2025.

“These include a comprehensive five-year safety and development plan, anchored on the establishment of a nine-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee the affairs of the sport.”
