A pit that they were excavating for gold fell on them at Twifo Mampong on Thursday, September 25, 2025, leaving three confirmed dead and four more trapped underground in a catastrophic event at a galamsey site.
Three of the seven people participating in the illegal mining operation reportedly ran a pumping machine above the surface, while the other four were operating beneath.
According to the story, after the fall, a survivor hurried to sound the alert.
Twifo Atti-Morkwa’s District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Isaac Yawson, disclosed that initial investigations indicated the pit belonged to a known illicit miner, and the young guys had allegedly entered it at night without permission.
Since then, the DCE has mandated the pit owner’s immediate arrest while rescue operations continue.
