Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has demanded that an Emergency Care Law be passed immediately in order to address the senseless deaths of accident victims at medical facilities around the nation.
He claimed that such laws will guarantee that careless medical personnel are held responsible and stop what he called “repeated misconduct within the healthcare system.”
“There are many examples of these needless deaths in this country and the same people, when you see them working outside, their attitude is different, which means that there is something wrong here,” he stated.
Mr. Bagbin made the call in response to a remark made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over the murder of Charles Ammisah, a 29-year-old engineer who worked at Promasidor Ghana Limited and was killed in a hit-and-run incident on February 6 of this year.
The Speaker gave Parliament’s Health Committee instructions to review reports from the Ministry of Health and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s investigations and to carefully consider their conclusions.
He emphasised that neither the Ministry of Health nor the participating hospitals should be left to handle the situation alone because it has become a national priority.
“We have to take control and we need to enquire further into the matter and we need to hold people accountable. This is one of the needless deaths we have experienced in this country.”
“At the end of the day, the Minister of Health, together with the committee, will have to come before this House and then we can take that opportunity to legislate on the matter and try to bring finality to these needless deaths in our country,” he said.
Mr Ammisah died after allegedly being turned away from multiple medical facilities after being engaged in a hit-and-run incident at the Circle Overpass in Accra.
