Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former vice president and flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2028, has urged party members to maintain unity and discipline while the party works through internal procedures and gets ready for the next elections.
Speaking to party supporters following his election as flagbearer on Saturday, January 31, 2026, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that the NPP’s greatest strength is still unity, cautioning that internal conflicts could reduce the party’s prospects of holding onto power.
He exhorted people to prioritise the party’s overall goals over their own.
He believes that maintaining credibility and public trust requires discipline at all party levels.
He issued caution against acts and remarks that can exacerbate tensions, disseminate false information, or cause internal strife, especially during delicate political times.

He added, “To secure anything precious in this life, we must be prepared to fight the hard battles, prepared to work hard and be prepared to withstand difficult circumstances, Ghana and the NPP are appreciative of all of you.”
Dr. Bawumia also urged party members to behave in a way that embodies the NPP’s democratic principles, emphasising that peaceful interaction and adherence to party regulations are crucial for preserving internal harmony.
He acknowledged the fervour and zeal of party members while reminding them that respect for one another should not be sacrificed in the name of political rivalry. As a result, he urged all candidates, party officials, and supporters to respect the party’s code of conduct.
He described the primary as a reflection of the party’s long-standing dedication to internal democracy and thanked party delegates, election officials, security forces, and the media for their contributions to the process.
Regardless of their chosen choices, he said all members should respect the outcome.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia cautioned party communicators and grassroots supporters against disseminating false material, especially on social media, as this might damage the party’s reputation and divert attention from its development-focused message.
“It matters not which side you supported, winners and those who didn’t win at this particular time, we are in this together,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the NPP will win important upcoming elections if its members continued to be disciplined, focused, and dedicated to their common objectives.
With 110,643 votes, or 56.48% of all valid votes cast, former vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was victorious in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.
On Saturday, January 31, 2026, the Electoral Commission proclaimed him the victor.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who received 46,554 votes (23.76%), former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who received 36,303 votes (18.53%), former Minister of Education and Bosomtwi MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who received 1,999 votes (1.02%), and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, who received 402 votes (0.21%), were among the contenders.
His contenders pledged to work with him to win the forthcoming 2028 general elections after expressing pleasure with the election’s result.
Dr. Bawumia promised to bring the party together before the 2028 elections and thanked party delegates for their faith in him.
In order for the NPP to “break the eight” and win an unprecedented third consecutive term in government, he urged his former enemies to unite behind a shared vision.
Party authorities praised delegates for their involvement and dedication to the party’s democratic process, characterising the primary as mainly peaceful and transparent.
The NPP is anticipated to step up its 2024 election preparations now that the flagbearership fight is over, as Dr. Bawumia starts the process of uniting the party’s supporters and reaching out to the wider Ghanaian public.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, however, has acknowledged the results of the party’s presidential primary, stating that he was ready to win or lose.
On Saturday, January 31, 2026, Agyapong told supporters, “I am a veteran politician, so I know.” I’ve experienced a number of setbacks, so I prepared for the worst. The worst has occurred, but that doesn’t imply that life is over.
“So keep faith alive and be happy with the outcome. Who knows what will happen tomorrow…The delegates have spoken, and we have to take it. We don’t know what is in store for us tomorrow.”
He thanked his campaign crew and encouraged them to have hope.
