Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s candidacy as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the general elections on December 7 has drawn harsh criticism from the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which called his recent visit to the Volta Region a “waste of time and resources.”
Dr. Bawumia’s visit, according to the NDC, was essentially a goodbye tour as he gets ready to leave the political arena.
NDC Volta Regional Chairman Mr. James Gunu echoed this stance in a statement that was made public on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
“We are also not surprised that Dr. Bawumia miserably lost the NPP’s flagbearer contest to Ken Agyepong in the Volta Region. Voltarians, whether NDC or NPP, naturally prefer honest, truthful, and trustworthy people.” Mr Gunu said.
Mr. Gunu drew attention to the sharp contrast between the reception given to Dr. Bawumia and the resounding backing the Voltarians gave former President John Dramani Mahama during the NDC presidential primary.
He ascribed this to the government of Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia being viewed as marginalizing and neglecting the Volta Region.
In addition, the NDC requested payment of $126 million cedi equivalent, claiming it is owed to constituencies in the Volta Region as part of the commitment to provide “One Million Dollar Per Constituency” during the previous seven years. Mr. Gunu also called the government’s unfulfilled pledge to construct model schools in every Zongo community “a big deception.”
