Ghanaian senior high schools will not take part in the balloting or further phases of the 2025 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) due to financial limitations, according to the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS).

The association notified Primetime Limited, the quiz’s organisers, in a letter dated October 3, 2025, signed by CHASS National Secretary Baro Primus, that many schools lack the resources and student preparation necessary to participate.

“The government funds intended for such activities have not been released,” CHASS said.

“We regret to inform you that schools will not be able to participate in the balloting and subsequently the quiz competition due to non-availability of funds,” the letter read.

The association promised to notify organisers of its decision and stated that it would reevaluate its position once the government released the necessary cash.

For any inconvenience this decision may have caused, CHASS also expressed regret.

Ghana’s senior high schools participate in an annual national quiz contest called the National scientific & Maths Quiz (NSMQ), which focusses on scientific and maths subjects.

Since its beginning in 1993, the NSMQ has expanded from a regional competition with 32 schools to a national tournament with widespread participation.

Produced by Primetime Limited, the tournament is one of Ghana’s most renowned academic events that encourages academic success and STEM education.

Funding shortfalls and disruptions have been obstacles in the past. Due to a lack of support, the programme halted operations between 2010 and 2011.
