President John Dramani Mahama and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno have been urged by some chiefs and members of the Ntweafo Royal Family of Atuabo in the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area of the Western Region to take immediate action in response to what they see as increasing political meddling in the region’s most important affairs.
Despite the fact that the region already has a constitutionally appointed and well-known leader, Awulae Amihere Kpanyinli III, the chiefs claim that some politicians in the current administration are interfering with customary procedures to influence an illegal seizure of the paramountcy.
They pointed out that the current Paramount Chief is still the legitimate holder of the position and has held a number of leadership positions within the Regional House of Chiefs.
The chiefs voiced worry that the peace and unity of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area was being threatened by the growing political engagement in chieftaincy issues, which is undermining long-standing traditions.
They emphasized the necessity of keeping traditional authority and partisan political influence strictly apart.
Chief of Salma Nana Kwame Bentum II, speaking on behalf of the community, asked lawmakers to focus on their responsibilities rather than meddling in matters of holy custom.
“We are calling on President Mahama to call these politicians to order. We also appeal to the IGP to caution some police officers whose actions could lead to unrest in our area,” he said.
The chiefs additionally claimed that a non-chief had unlawfully taken over the Paramount Chief’s palace and that political actors had enabled the person to obtain police protection.
They claim that after an attempted murder attempt, the situation worsened and the palace was looted. Tensions in the traditional area have increased since the aforementioned person moved into the palace without consequence.
The group maintains that in order to uphold tradition, maintain peace, and stop additional upheaval, national authorities must act immediately.
In order to maintain the integrity of chieftaincy in the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area and restore peace, they are pleading with the President and the IGP to move quickly.
