Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has filed a defamation lawsuit against Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, who serves as the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Randy Abbey is pursuing a claim for damages amounting to GH¢20 million against Abronye in a writ submitted to the Accra High Court on Tuesday [August 26, 2025].
The plaintiff alleged that Abronye damaged his reputation by making radio remarks suggesting that he visits cocoa farms and meets with cocoa farmers using a chair driven from Accra.
He reiterated in his writ that Abronye, on the same radio platform, alleged that he (the plaintiff) intended to “steal COCOBOD money to the detriment of cocoa farmers” by replacing the Director of Finance at COCOBOD.
Randy Abbey rejected Abronye’s claims, characterizing the politician’s statements as a deliberate effort to damage his reputation and diminish his public standing.
The writ continued, saying, “The defendant’s actions were undertaken with the intention of eroding the public trust and confidence that the plaintiff has built in his professional career, fully aware that such false statements would result in irreparable harm to the plaintiff’s personal dignity.”
Besides the damages, the CEO of COCOBOD is also requesting that the court issue an order to Abronye for a total retraction, an apology without reservations, and the removal of the defamatory publication.
Additionally, the plaintiff is requesting a permanent injunction to prevent Abronye or anyone representing him from making defamatory statements about him.
