The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has taken steps to address a problem found with a limited batch of 2026 embossed number plates, saying that affected vehicle owners can get free replacements at any DVLA office nationwide.

The Authority said in a public announcement on April 27 that regular quality inspections showed that some plates did not adhere to the Authority’s durability requirements, resulting in the fading of the printed characters.

Even though some plates had already been given to car owners, the impacted batch was promptly removed from circulation upon detection.

“All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement,” the Authority said.

The DVLA expressed regret for the inconvenience and acknowledged full responsibility for the error.

“The DVLA is strengthening its quality assurance processes to prevent a recurrence and remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and high-quality vehicle registration services,” the statement read.

The size of the impacted batch and the number of cars that received the faulty plates were not disclosed by the Authority.

Owners of vehicles are urged to seek help at the DVLA office that is closest to them.
