Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister of the Interior, has declared that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) will receive 70 excavators that were confiscated from illegal mining operators in order to support a nationwide desilting operation meant to address the country’s ongoing flooding problems.

The Minister states that as part of government initiatives to enhance drainage systems and lessen the effects of floods, especially in urban areas like Accra, the equipment that was seized during anti-galamsey operations will be repurposed for public use.

In response to questioning on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 10, Muntaka revealed the government’s efforts to address Accra’s chronic flooding and enhance environmental sanitation.

“Currently, what we are doing is that all the seized excavators from the illegal mining activities, we agreed that about 70 of them should be given to NADMO so that they can take them across the country to do desilting.”

“We will do the handover next week so that they can use them to desilt most of the drains but the bottom line is we should begin to clean our surroundings,” he said.

Flooding has continued to be a problem in many areas of Ghana, especially in Accra, the country’s capital, where heavy rains frequently cause significant property damage, resident displacement, and disruptions to business operations.

Over time, experts have determined that some of the main causes of urban flooding include clogged drains, careless waste disposal, and uncontrolled construction on waterways.
