The notion that the EC Chairperson alone is in charge of guaranteeing peace and the results of elections has been disputed by Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
In response to current public discussions regarding the Commission’s responsibility for upholding electoral integrity in the run-up to the general elections in December 2024, he issued these remarks.
On Monday, September 2, Dr. Asare stressed the media in Accra that everyone must work together to make the election process successful and that no one person should bear the full weight of responsibility.
He called on the people to reject assertions that the EC Chairperson is the only one responsible for a peaceful election, even if they come from well-known people.
“The suggestion that the peace and the outcome of the election are hinged on the chairperson of the EC is completely untrue,” Dr. Asare said.
“The EC has no intention of bloating the register to give any political party an advantage over the other,” he added.
He restated that the integrity of elections is maintained by the EC as an institution run by a group of professionals who share organizational responsibility for this task.
In order to ensure a free and peaceful election, Dr. Asare also urged all parties involved, law enforcement, and the general people to work together.
Dr. Asare addressed worries about possible electoral manipulation and refuted claims that the Electoral Commission is trying to sway the voter roll in favor of a specific political party.
