Ghanaians have been assured by National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama that his government will continue the Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative and give the funding required to make it viable.
Speaking about his ideas at a meeting with the clergy in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, 2024, Mahama refuted rumors that he would dismantle Free SHS if elected, calling the claims a “political trick” meant to mislead the population.
Mahama reaffirmed that “Free SHS has come to stay,” stressing that although the program has increased access to education, his administration will continue to prioritize funding.
“We must ensure it is well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going.”
The NDC’s commitment to the Free SHS policy, with a focus on securing steady funding to address the program’s challenges, as demonstrated by Mr. Mahama’s statement.
Although they disagree on how to enhance the policy’s quality and implementation, this stance comes after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC reaffirmed their support for it.
Mahama emphasized the need of a top-notch education and pledged free SHS funding, stressing out that a program with adequate funding will enhance academic outcomes.
He assured Ghanaians that Free SHS would not only endure but also expand under his leadership in order to better meet the needs of future generations.
