President John Mahama and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu have received praise from the Ghana Education Service (GES) for their dedication to bringing back high-quality education, especially at the foundational and basic levels.

The government’s latest actions, which were announced during the President’s media appearance on Wednesday, September 10, represent a major shift in Ghanaian education, according to GES.

The unprecedented budgetary contribution of GH₵9.1 billion to basic education—the most in the previous 50 years—is one of the main attractions.

According to GES, this is a significant step in reviving fundamental learning, which has long been overlooked even though it is the most important phase of a child’s academic development.

The GH₵564 million allocated for textbook purchases under the new curriculum, of which GH₵415 million comes from the GETFund, is another significant achievement.

According to GES, this is the biggest textbook investment in Ghana’s history, guaranteeing that schools have the resources they need to enhance instruction and learning.

The government’s widespread distribution of sanitary pads to schoolgirls in an effort to lower absenteeism associated with menstrual health issues was also emphasized by the Service.

Ada West, Gushegu, Ga East, Ejura, Ga West, and Ledzokuku are among the areas where the program has already begun, and more are anticipated to follow.

Furthermore, in 2025, the government would allocate GH₵3.5 billion from GETFund to the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, the largest sum since the program’s start.

It is anticipated that this investment will reinforce connected services, enhance student feeding, and make it easier to gradually phase out the double-track system.

The SHS food program has improved, according to GES, which also cited encouraging comments from parents, instructors, students, and other stakeholders.

GES stated that there is already noticeable development in the field, despite the fact that the 2025 education budget was only enacted five months ago. These changes demonstrate the ongoing emphasis on education as a catalyst for social change and national development.

The Service added in a statement written by Daniel Fenyi, its Head of Public Relations, that “GES remains committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian child has access to quality education.”
