The recent passage of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, has prompted the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to declare plans to hold a demonstration.

On Wednesday, June 4, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye wrote on Facebook that the party, together with other political parties, will take to the streets of Kumasi to protest the charge, calling it a “wicked” and “obnoxious” tax.

On Tuesday, June 3, Parliament passed the bill, which contains a GH¢1 fuel fee, in spite of the Minority Caucus’ walkout, which they criticized as placing an additional financial burden on Ghanaians.

The goal of the measure is to increase revenue in order to pay off the nation’s enormous debt in the energy sector and guarantee a steady supply of electricity.

The overall debt of the energy sector as of March 2025 is US$3.1 billion, according to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who laid the measure under a certificate of urgency.
