At the opening of a memorial park and a massive statue in honor of Thomas Sankara on Saturday, the government and citizens of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou were joined by a team from Ghana.
Thomas Isidore Noel Sankara was a Pan-Africanist revolutionary and Burkinabè military officer who led Burkina Faso as president from 1983 until his assassination in 1987 at the age of 37. He had taken power in a coup.
In a solidarity ceremony with Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou, President John Dramani Mahama was represented by the Minister of Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka; and other dignitaries.
Lt. Col. Gbevlo Lartey (rtd), Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States; Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey and the Chairperson of the Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliament; Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and presidential spokesperson, two former National Security capos under President Rawlings (Naval Captain Asaase Gyima (rtd) and Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi) were also part of the Ghanaian delegation.
To commemorate Captain Thomas Isidore Noel Sankara and his twelve companions who were slain on October 15, 1987, the Burkina Faso government unveiled a massive statue during the memorial park’s opening.
During the ceremony, the Burkina Faso government and people emphasized that these warriors are “Fallen but forever alive in their hearts.”
They have faith that the Thomas Sankara Memorial, a site of introspection and revolution, would help them combat colonialism and terrorism and rise beyond injustice.
According to Dr. Omane Boamah, former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings earned a great deal of appreciation after his death, and it was revealed this week that a ceremonial street in Ouagadougou will be dedicated in his honor.
