The United States Global Water Strategy High Priority Country Plan for Ghana was jointly announced by Dr. Freda Prempeh, Ghana’s Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, and Virginia Palmer, the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana.

Building on the $89 million that USAID has already committed in Ghana’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector since 2009, this plan calls for an additional investment of about $100 million over the next five years.

There are notable geographical differences in the availability of WASH services, which has a negative impact on health, education, and economic growth in Ghana.

In the Greater Accra Region, 98% of people have access to clean water, while in the North East, 55% do. In addition, the national average for open defecation in rural areas is somewhat higher than 30%, while the five northern Ghanaian regions have rates that are higher than 50%.

During interviews with the media, Ambassador Palmer reaffirmed the US government’s commitment to helping Ghana’s WASH sector.

“The US government is dedicated to carrying on our collaboration to guarantee that every individual in Ghana has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, which will improve health and spur economic development,” she underlined.

We’ll work together to make sure everyone has access to clean water and sanitary facilities.
