This year, GHS 2.8 billion has been granted by Parliament for road maintenance to improve the movement of goods and services.

In 2024, pothole repair, graveling, and reshaping accounted for 43% of the nation’s total road maintenance.

Road maintenance is part of the government’s resetting agenda, Mr. Isaac Adjei Mensah, the chairman of Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, told the media in Parliament House in Accra.

According to him, the administration inherited GHS 109 billion in commitments to road contractors and a total debt stock of GHS 105 billion under the road sector.

The road sector’s arrears obligation covered both completed and stalled road projects as well as signed contracts.

According to Mr. Adjei Mensah, attempts are being made to increase the government’s revenue mobilization push by reintroducing road tolls with cutting-edge technology.

The lawmaker, who is also the Western Region’s Wassa East MP, expressed hope that the government’s US$10 billion strategic infrastructure plan, known as the “Big Push,” would inevitably improve the state of the nation’s roads.

In the meantime, the Appropriation Bill was approved by Parliament early on Saturday, March 29, allowing Ghana’s Finance Minister to use public monies for a number of initiatives and programs that were suggested in the budget.

Thus, money from the Consolidated Fund, public finances, and other relevant sources can be taken by the government.
