GHS1 million has been allocated by the government to aid the victims of the January 2, 2025, fire that destroyed Accra’s Kantamanto Market.
When the Kantamanto Traders Association, which represents 13 groups, visited President John Dramani Mahama soon after he took office, he made a commitment that the donation fulfills.
In addition to presenting the donation on behalf of the president, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah gave the traders the assurance that the government will renovate the market into a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility that would enhance trading activity and guarantee improved safety measures.
He was also sympathetic for the traders’ losses. In order to prevent such disasters, he emphasized the importance of working together to rebuild the market to provide improved emergency access and increased security.
On behalf of the impacted organizations, Kantamanto Traders Association Chairman Rev. Opoku Afreh thanked the government for its assistance.
He bemoaned the extent of the devastation, pointing out that more than half of the market was destroyed, along with millions of dollars’ worth of bales of merchandise and significant sales proceeds.
He added that the group had negotiated a $100 million credit agreement with Access Bank to finance the market’s renovation, but he urged the government to step in and settle the conflicts surrounding the impacted land.
Deputy Chiefs of Staff Stanislav Dogbe and Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, President Marietta Brew Oppong’s legal advisor, as well as other members of the presidential staff, attended the occasion.
Nearly 30,000 businessmen experienced financial difficulties as a result of the January 2 fire, which destroyed over 7,000 stores.
