The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally revoked its policy directive regarding post-retirement contracts and retirement age for senior academic staff at public universities.
Following a meeting with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) leadership, the Minister for Education issued an order.
GTEC stated in a letter dated April 27, 2026, that the withdrawal has an impact on the policy direction it previously issued on October 1, 2025.
“Following a meeting between the Honourable Minister for Education and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Honourable Minister has issued a directive to GTEC to immediately withdraw its policy directive dated 1st October, 2025,” the Commission said.
According to GTEC, the action is in accordance with the Minister’s directives and is meant to facilitate more extensive engagements with tertiary education sector stakeholders.
“In compliance with the Minister’s directive, and pending further consultations with all relevant stakeholders to ensure broad consensus and institutional sustainability, GTEC hereby announces the immediate withdrawal of the attached policy directive,” the statement stated.
The Commission stated that following the conclusion of consultations, new guidelines will be announced.
It also stated that “further guidance will be communicated following the conclusion of stakeholder consultations.”
Concerns about retirement age and post-retirement activities for senior academic personnel at public universities were covered by the rescinded order.
Key stakeholders, including vice chancellors of traditional and technical universities, the Ministry of Education, the Public Services Commission, and the leadership of UTAG and the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), were copied on the letter, which was signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo on behalf of the Director-General.
