Juliet Mettle was found guilty and fined 60 penalty units by the recently established Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A.) District Court for preparing food for public consumption without conducting a medical examination of her employees and for doing so in an unhygienic, open public area.

Mettle pleaded guilty to both charges and was found guilty on Tuesday at the court’s first session.

Concurrent with the fine of GH₵360, there is a default penalty of three months in prison with hard labor.

Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, told reporters following the meeting that the first case was a sign of the A.M.A.’s increased dedication to law enforcement as part of its “Reset Accra” campaign.

He declared that the court would be an essential instrument in preserving order across the capital and that it had been a personal focus since taking office.

He pointed out that by penalizing traders who cross the red line and areas set aside for dealing, the court would significantly contribute to maintaining the recent decongestion effort.

His Lordship Justice Imoro Tanko of the Supreme Court emphasized the value of the court in providing prompt justice for small offenses that would otherwise overwhelm district, circuit, and high courts in an address given on behalf of the Acting Chief Justice during the court’s commissioning.

He urged court users to preserve the institution’s honor by treating it with care and respect, and he praised the A.M.A. for taking the lead in making the facility a reality.

Modern amenities such as a typing pool, registrar’s office, magistrate’s chambers, docket room, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) office, and restrooms are all part of the A.M.A. District Court, which is housed within the Assembly’s City Hall grounds.

It is anticipated that it will deal with matters including unapproved developments, traffic infractions, public nuisances, and sanitation.
