The Accra Zoo was visited by the Forestry Commission (FC) Board of Commissioners, led by Chairman Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, to evaluate ongoing construction projects and recent additions made to ensure that guests can enjoy once the Zoo is reopened.

Following a lion assault on an intruder in August, the Zoo was forced to close. Renovations were being done at the time of the incident to beef up security measures, add more amenities to ensure visitor comfort, and add excitement and intrigue to the Zoo.

The Board was guided by the Zoo Manager, Mr. Stephen Dunia Tamanja, to view a number of recent construction projects. He highlighted that many efforts had been made to ensure the Zoo’s overall appearance was more inviting.

He gave the Board a tour of the Zoo’s most recent improvements and highlighted some of them. He informed the Board that cages have been built to house the zebras and bush bucks that will be transported from Shai Hills Resource Reserve to the Zoo.

In addition to the new cages, the Zoo has two new iron gates, a new visitors center with benches, prominently labeled cages, street lights along all access routes, strong signs with clear directions placed at strategic locations, and wider and higher cages to increase security.

The Board of Commissioners applauded the Chief Executive, management, and employees for their efforts and expressed excitement about the most recent development work at the Zoo.

In related news, the Board of Commissioners and FC’s Executive Management Team (EMT) held an interactive meeting.

According to the Commission’s Chief Executive, Mr. John Allotey, he is supported in his role as Chief Executive by a very skilled EMT. He continued by saying that the EMT is fortunate to have members with experience who prepare reports and CE’s Briefs, among other things.

As the go-between for the EMT and the Board, Mr. Allotey coordinates the EMT’s ideas and proposes them to the Board. As a result, he thinks it’s a good idea for the Board to meet with EMT for the first time in the Commission’s history.

Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, the chairman of the board, declared that the meeting between the two parties was fruitful because, in his opinion, EMT handles all of the work; as a result, it was essential for the Board to get together, listen, and talk about pertinent issues in managing the Commission’s affairs.

He continued by saying that the Board is in charge of creating the policies, which are then carried out by the EMT. Therefore, in order to accomplish FC’s objective and vision, the Board has to learn more about FC from the EMT.

Members of the EMT are meeting with the Board for the first time, so Mr. Allotey urged them to express their opinions.

Every EMT member took advantage of the chance to provide insightful recommendations on how to enhance the Commission’s functioning.

They received assurances from the board chairman that the issues and worries highlighted will be discussed at board sessions.
