The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has given the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) the necessary office supplies to help with the creation of a Migrant Desk in its International Relations Office.
The equipment is designed to help manage migration-related issues in the city and comprises a laptop, a blue-chip keyboard, stationery, a three-in-one printer, two swivel seats, a monitoring screen, an executive table, and a junior table.

The AMA proposed the creation of the Migrant Desk to the IOM, and it is anticipated that the desk will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Interior and the Social Welfare Department to build on the achievements of the CLEAN Project, which, among other things, concentrated on integrating migrants into the informal waste sector.
The Migrant Desk’s primary responsibilities will include data gathering and analysis, policy creation, stakeholder education, interagency cooperation, and interaction with immigrant populations to guarantee their active involvement in decision-making.
Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, the mayor of Accra, accepted the items and thanked the IOM for its ongoing cooperation and support. She emphasized that the Migrant Desk will be crucial in meeting the needs of migrants, especially those working in the unorganized sector.

“The establishment of the Migrant Desk is a significant step towards ensuring the socio-economic integration of migrants in Accra… It will provide a dedicated structure to collect data, develop policies, and coordinate efforts to protect the rights of migrants while enhancing their contributions to the local economy,” she said.
Ms. Fatou Diallo Ndiaye, the IOM Chief of Mission, praised the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for its efforts to protect migrants and promised more assistance to strengthen the city’s ability to handle migration.
She revealed that the supplies will allow the office to provide migrants with significant assistance and emphasized the need for police in charge of the desk to undergo thorough training so they are prepared to assist in gathering information on migrants entering the city.
She described the partnership as a long-standing one, with both parties sharing a common vision for comprehensive migrant protection, and she gave the IOM her word that they would continue working with the AMA to create information sheets that would educate migrants about the services that are available to them in the city.

In order to effectively manage the intricacies of migration and offer migrants prompt assistance, the Chief of Mission expressed optimism that the Migrant Desk will eventually be expanded.
The Migrant Desk would be housed in the AMA’s International interactions Office, which is responsible for overseeing international collaboration and cross-border interactions.
