Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, is pleading with President Akufo-Addo to uphold his word to Ghanaians and dismiss his cousin Ken Ofori-Atta as finance minister after sealing the $3 billion IMF deal.

Recall that the Majority Caucus in Parliament demanded that Mr. Ofori-Atta be removed from office. However, after meeting with the President, the caucus announced in a statement dated October 26, 2022, that the President had asked them to step aside until Ghana’s discussions with the IMF were complete.

The IMF’s executive board approved the $3 billion rescue on May 17, 2023, allowing for an immediate payout of around $600 million.

After the deal was successfully completed, Mr. Ablakwa is inquiring as to whether President Nana Akufo-Addo will take his lawmakers’ proposal into consideration.

The North Tongu MP wrote on Facebook that “after an embarrassing IMF U-Turn deal, Ghanaians expect President Akufo-Addo to keep his promise by firing his cousin, Ken Ofori-Atta—who is now widely regarded as Ghana’s most disastrous Finance Minister.”
