Kennedy Agyapong, a presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), claims his recent “showdown” remarks made during the party’s super delegates conference ”means I am going to prove to you that I will beat you during the elections” and not the other way around as it was perceived by others.

”Showdown” comments made by Mr. Agyapong drew a range of responses. Some individuals accused him of disrespecting the party’s leadership and said his behaviour was unpresidential, while others backed his right to free expression.

The NPP firebrand was accused in a viral video during the party’s special delegate conference of threatening President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The party Disciplinary Committee subsequently invited him to defend his comments.

For the first time on the subject, he said that his “showdown” remark was misinterpreted.

He clarified, “Showdown simply means I am going to prove to you that I will beat you during the elections,” and further, “I mean, it is only the NPP that will call you to the disciplinary committee when you say showdown.”

Will the vice president, who jokingly declared he would challenge [John Dramani] Mahama to a battle, also be given an invitation to appear before the disciplinary committee?

The phrase “showdown” was used by Agyapong’s campaign manager, Kwame Owusu, to describe his fierce intention to win the election on November 4.

Are you worried about the meaning of confrontation, he continued, regardless of whether the Vice President was the target of the altercation? Because, in my opinion, the showdown usually marks the end of a confrontation or a contest. In that respect, if it is addressed to the Vice President, it simply means that come November, he will win regardless of what occurs.

“So that’s a showdown, a decisive conflict, and competition, It’s nothing to worry about; it’s just plain English delivered in a different way, so it’s not a danger, he said.

Agyapong is eager to completely cooperate with the party’s disciplinary procedure, he further emphasized.

In connection with that, his organization is planning a large health walk called the “Showdown Walk” that is scheduled to begin tomorrow from the Ayimensah Toll Booth and end at the Oman FM Premises in Madina, where he will be giving a speech to the participants.
