The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) and the National Communications Authority (NCA) have been tasked by Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, to provide him with a thorough briefing on the quality of mobile network services throughout the nation.
In order to resolve ongoing issues with service quality, especially in the Volta Region and other underserved areas of the country, he also instructed them to call a conference with the CEOs of all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
This came after a Volta Region citizen complained about the subpar quality of mobile telecommunications services.
The reports deeply disturbed Hon. George, who emphasized that all Ghanaians must have access to dependable digital connectivity since it is essential to the country’s progress.
“Access to reliable mobile connectivity is a right, not a privilege,” the minister said. “We must take decisive action to ensure that no region is left behind in our digitalisation drive. I expect to meet with all the CEOs of the network operators soon to demand accountability and concrete timelines for resolution.”
In response to the complaints, NCA Director-General Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko stated that enhancing coverage and service quality in underprivileged communities is a regulatory priority.
He went on to say that steps are being taken to increase oversight of telecoms’ adherence to their licensing requirements and that, if required, enforcement measures would be taken.
Through strict regulatory control and cooperative stakeholder engagement, the ministry’s participation represents a reinvigorated attempt to guarantee equity in access to digital services and to advance Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
