The West African Examinations Council Chairman, Prof. Thomas B. R. Yormah, and his delegation paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, as part of preparations for the Council’s 74th Anniversary celebration, which Ghana will host this year.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the newly elected Chairman to formally present himself to the Ghanaian government through the Minister, as has traditionally been WAEC’s procedure.
The Minister for Education, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu, welcomed the delegation and congratulated Prof. Yomah on his nomination. He hailed the visit as timely, given the current reforms and innovations in the education sector.

In addressing more general sector issues, the Minister voiced worry about the ongoing shortfall in science and maths education, pointing out that these fields continue to be government priorities.
He underlined Ghana’s dedication to upholding WAEC’s mandate and stressed the importance of protecting exam integrity, especially in a time when artificial intelligence and digital technologies are becoming more and more prevalent.
