People with hypertension have a far lower chance of dying young if they make lifestyle changes including managing stress well, drinking less alcohol, and consuming fewer processed foods and salt.

According to Dr. Felix Awindaogo, a cardiologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, hypertension is a chronic illness, but complications that frequently result in early death can be avoided with the correct drug regimen and non-pharmacological intervention.

Dr. Awindaogo clarified that uncontrolled hypertension raised the chance of early death by roughly 13% in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

He pointed out that a 10 mmHg drop in blood pressure could significantly lower the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and cardiac arrest brought on by hypertension.

Dr. Awindaogo voiced worry that a large number of patients neglected to attend planned reviews and treatment regimens, which he claimed compromised efficient management.

According to him, “Most patients do not attend reviews on time for accurate checks and recommendations which affect their treatment plans.”

Dr. Awindaogo emphasised that such reactions may be appropriately controlled and advised people experiencing side effects, such as impotence and other related issues, to seek medical counsel rather than stopping treatment.

He pointed out that prompt care could still stop the development even though some patients reported late with complications already in place.

He went on to say that these drug reactions were caused by physiology, illnesses, or other pharmaceutical interference.

“Medications for hypertension are lifelong, do not stop taking your medication, consistently modify your lifestyle and you can live with the condition for over 50 years,” he suggested.

The cardiologist also recommended routine screening starting at age 35, citing the importance of early detection in avoiding consequences.

He urged the public to get blood pressure monitors from a reputable pharmacy and monitor their readings at home to aid clinical treatment.
