15,290 new HIV infections were reported in Ghana in 2024, according to Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Ghana AIDS Commission’s (GAC) Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator.

Ghana currently has 334,721 persons living with HIV and AIDS, consisting of 62% females and 31% males, with a countrywide prevalence rate of 1.49 percent, he said, adding that the new infections were composed of 62% females and 32% males.

About 1.3 million new infections and 630,000 related fatalities are reported each year, according to Mr. Bambilla, who also stated that 39 million people worldwide are living with HIV and AIDS.

He was giving a speech at two different HIV/AIDS forums that the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) hosted for its Community Fire and Police Assistants at the Kenyasi Police Training School in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region and the Duayaw-Nkwanta Fire Academy Training School (FATS) in the Tano North Municipality.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Ghana Police Service (GPS), the GAC, and the non-governmental organization Hope for Future Generations (HFFG) worked together with the YEA to organize the forums with the goal of educating the participants on HIV and AIDS.

The public should take precautions against infections, Mr. Bambilla said, adding that HIV and AIDS were still common and a public health concern.

He claimed that “Ghana needs a healthy security force that will work hard to maintain law and order in the society” and that security personnel were one of the main groups at risk of contracting HIV and AIDS.

Basic information about HIV/AIDS, prevention techniques, HIV treatment, care, and support, as well as human rights and HIV/AIDS, was covered by additional speakers, such as Ms. Mercy Amokwandoh, the Project Officer of the HFFG, and Miss Aabida Abu Ahmed, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of GAC.
