MTN Ghana, the telecom giant, says it will phase down its 2G and 3G networks gradually to allow users adequate time to switch to 4G.
Many users still use 2G and 3G, according to MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett, who made this observation during a press briefing at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra. He clarified that some people just don’t have 4G-capable smartphones, while others choose these networks in order to better control data usage.
“A lot of our customers are still operating on 3G. Even though 4G is widely available, some choose to stay on 3G because they feel data usage is faster on 4G. Others, however, use older devices that don’t support 4G,” Mr. Blewett said.
“If we push to shut down 2G and 3G without ensuring customers have affordable 4G devices, we risk leaving people behind,” he emphasized.
He continued by saying that although MTN is dedicated to maximizing spectrum utilization by eventually shutting down 2G and 3G, the procedure needs to take device availability into account.
