In an effort to combat the growing unemployment issue, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to generate 1.7 million new jobs between 2025 and 2029.
The program is anticipated to bring in the 300,000 new workers per year and lower the unemployment rate by 120,000 annually.
During a briefing on Monday in Accra, the Party’s Employment and Jobs Creation Committee announced the plan.
In a news release, Mr. Goosie Tanoh, the head of the party’s Employment and Jobs Creation Committee, stated that the NDC would reach the milestone by implementing five key initiatives, including modernizing and reorganizing employment institutions and enacting laws aimed at fostering job growth.
The party announced that it would implement the “National Employment Trust” to mobilize resources for a “concerted jobs push” and that it would implement the “Aspire 24” campaign to realign employer and employee mindsets.
In order to guarantee inclusivity in employment, further steps include the introduction of the “Levelling Up” program and coordination through a high-level “National Employment Coordination Committee.”
The NDC promised to modernize the institutional and legal framework in order to hasten the creation of respectable jobs.
“This will include accelerated implementation of the Ghana Labour Market Information System, updating the Labour Bill 2024 into an Employment Act to replace the existing Labour Act 2023, and putting in place a Bilateral Labour migration framework to support safe, orderly and regular labour migration of Ghanaians to other countries, facilitate access to decent work abroad, and ensure respect for human rights and fundamental labour rights for Ghanaian workers who migrate,” it said.
According to the Party, the “Aspire 24” program would provide Ghanaian people and businesses with the work ethic, values, tools, mindset, and resources they need to boost productivity and prosper in the 24-hour economy.
“With deliberate and painstaking policy interventions anchored on the 24-hour economy, we aim to create 1.7 million jobs between 2025 and 2029 and systematically reduce unemployment to below 5 per cent by 2034, if not earlier,” the Party said.
“Finally, we will set up the National Employment Coordination Committee with representatives from the Government, Labour, Employers, Students, and the Informal Sector to support the Minister of Employment in coordinating, implementing, We are very much aware of the challenges to creating a robust employment ecosystem, considering the economy’s decay,” it added.
The party included the creation of the Women’s Bank, improvements to the reform of pensions for workers in the unorganized sector, and the distribution of digital skills to those with disabilities as some of these.
