In response to the scandal surrounding the party’s parliamentary candidate for Assin Central’s withdrawal, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has removed its Central Regional Chairman.

Following a meeting on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) adopted a decision that was made public in a statement signed by Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC.

The NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Assin Central, Mr. Nurein Shaibu Mijima, is alleged to have withdrawn. This leads to the suspension, which takes effect immediately.

The FEC concluded that the withdrawal was made without the required authorization and in violation of the law.

“The purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate is unlawful as neither you nor the supposed ‘Regional Functional Executive Committee’ has the locus or power or authority to withdraw a serving Parliamentary Candidate of the party from a national election.” the FEC stated in a detailed statement outlining the reasons for the suspension.

“The reasons which underpinned the purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate are totally false and without any basis whatsoever.”

“You played a lead role in the purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate in clear violation of express directives given to you by the General Secretary and the National Chairman of the party.” It continued.

“By publicly announcing your purported withdrawal of the Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate knowing very well that same was without any legal or reasonable justification, you have engaged in clear anti-party behaviour and brought the name of the party into disrepute.”

The FEC further pointed out that the chairman’s actions were clearly against party policy and in flagrant violation of party regulations.

This choice was made in response to prior instances of disobedience to orders from the national leadership.

The suspended chairman has been ordered to stop identifying himself as the Central Regional Chairman of the NDC and to turn over any party property that is in his possession to the regional vice chairman, Ekow Okyere Panyin Eduamoah.
