Ernest Ofori Sarpong, the CEO of the Special Group of Companies, has been named the first Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

At a meeting on May 26, 2026, the University’s Governing Council accepted the appointment, which goes into effect on August 1, 2026, in compliance with the UniMAC Statutes.

As the ceremonial head of the university, Mr. Ofori Sarpong, a well-known businessman and entrepreneur from Ghana, is anticipated to provide leadership, advance the institution’s goals and strategic objectives, and award degrees and other academic honours on behalf of UniMAC.

According to UniMAC, his nomination was based on his “exemplary leadership,” wealth of expertise, and dedication to excellence, especially in the areas of community development, business development, education, and youth empowerment.

Mr. Ofori Sarpong, the founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies, has amassed a diverse corporate empire with holdings in strategic investments, manufacturing, real estate, and construction.

Additionally, he is involved in a number of significant economic endeavours, such as U2 Salt Limited, United Television (UTV), and Best Point Savings and Loans Limited.

Mr. Ofori Sarpong, a chartered accountant, is pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG), France, after earning a Master of Science in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom.

His contributions to entrepreneurship and national development have earned him numerous honours both domestically and internationally, such as the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year in 2025 and the Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity given at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Finance Outside of business, he has held a number of leadership positions, such as Chairman of the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences Advisory Board, Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), and Chairman of the EMY Africa Awards.

UniMAC expressed optimism that his hiring will improve the university’s standing both nationally and internationally, deepen its ties with business, and broaden its strategic alliances.

The Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) merged to form UniMAC, which was founded under the University of Media, Arts and Communication Act, 2020 (Act 1059).

Higher education, research, and professional training in media, arts, communication, languages, film, television, journalism, public relations, advertising, and allied fields are the university’s main areas of interest.
