Ghana’s Parliament has approved the nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings for key ministerial positions in President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
Following their successful parliamentary vetting, Mahama Ayariga has been approved to serve as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, while Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has received approval to become Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
Mahama Ayariga Approved as Local Government Minister
Mahama Ayariga, a former Majority Leader and Chairman of Parliament’s Business Committee, was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to lead the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
His new ministerial portfolio places him in charge of key areas including local governance, decentralisation, chieftaincy affairs and religious matters.
Ayariga appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, where he underwent scrutiny as part of the approval process for his ministerial appointment.
Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings to Lead Environment Ministry
Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has also secured parliamentary approval to head the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.
Her new role will involve overseeing government policies relating to environmental protection, scientific research, technology development and sustainable development.
The ministry is expected to play an important role in addressing environmental challenges while supporting innovation and the use of science and technology to promote Ghana’s economic development.
Appointments Committee Endorses Two Nominees
After the vetting process, Parliament’s Appointments Committee endorsed both nominees and submitted its recommendations to the House for consideration.
Parliament subsequently approved their nominations, paving the way for Mahama Ayariga and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings to formally assume their respective ministerial responsibilities.
Their approval forms part of President Mahama’s broader efforts to reorganise his government and strengthen the implementation of key government policies and national development priorities.
