Veteran broadcaster Kwami Sefa Kayi has apologised to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin after acknowledging that he failed to intervene when a panelist on his Kokrokoo programme described the politician as an “extortionist.”
Sefa Kayi admitted that Afenyo-Markin was justified in criticising him for not speaking up when the allegation was made during the radio discussion.
Sefa Kayi Admits He Should Have Intervened
Addressing the matter on the Kokrokoo programme, the host expressed regret over his failure to challenge the statement when Afenyo-Markin’s name was mentioned.
“I want to use this medium to apologise to Afenyo-Markin that I didn’t do well.”
Sefa Kayi explained that although some members of the panel used the description during the discussion, he did not immediately challenge the allegation or defend the Minority Leader.
He acknowledged that, as the host of the programme, he should have intervened when the claim was made during the live discussion.
Broadcaster Apologises to Minority Leader
According to Sefa Kayi, his failure to respond at the time gave Afenyo-Markin legitimate grounds to raise concerns about how the discussion was handled.
“So, I apologise because he said when his name was mentioned here that he is an extortionist; I didn’t stand for him to speak against it, and I believe that he has a point,” he said.
The broadcaster subsequently offered an apology to Afenyo-Markin, accepting responsibility for not addressing the allegation during the programme.
The development has attracted attention within Ghana’s media and political space, highlighting the importance of responsible political commentary, fair discussion and the role of programme hosts in managing claims made by panelists.
