The current Member of Parliament (MP) and candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lydia Alhassan, has received an official apology from John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, for his offensive remarks that connected her to the passing of her late husband.
The Widows Association of Ayawaso West Wuogon strongly criticized Mr. Dumelo for making “egregious and unsubstantiated” remarks, and this led to the latter’s apology.
Mr. Dumelo recently made an appearance in the media and made an implication that Lydia Alhassan, who had held the MP position prior to her husband’s death, was somewhat to blame for his demise.
Mr. Dumelo apologized and immediately retracted his earlier remarks in a Facebook post. “I apologise and unreservedly retract my previous comments. I extend my sincere and unconditional apologies to Hon. Lydia Alhassan for my remarks during the Media General public engagement (Community Manifesto) concerning the death of her husband.”
He went on to say that he was responding to insults directed at him personally by those who support Lydia Alhassan, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources.
He went on to say, “My comments were in response to personal attacks by supporters of the honourable minister, including false allegations regarding my mother’s death. However, I recognize that my reaction was inappropriate,”
Mr. Dumelo reaffirmed his commitment to the advancement of Ayawaso West Wuogon and promised to put in endless effort to bring about constructive change within the constituency.
