The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set an ambitious target of securing more than 1.5 million votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2028 general elections as the party intensifies preparations to return to power.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the Ashanti Region remains a crucial electoral stronghold for the party and will play a major role in determining the outcome of the 2028 presidential election.
The target has been assigned to the newly elected Ashanti Regional Executive Committee, led by Regional Chairman Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA. The leadership has been tasked with strengthening grassroots mobilisation and recovering votes lost by the party during the 2024 general elections.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service organised by the new Ashanti Regional executives in Kumasi on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Mr Kodua stressed that the party’s performance in the region would be critical to its national electoral fortunes.
He said the NPP expects the Ashanti Region to deliver more than 1.5 million votes for the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the next presidential election.
“The victory of NPP in 2028 will be determined by the Ashanti Region. We’re therefore giving you (COKA and executives) a target of more than 1.5 million votes.”
NPP Seeks to Recover Lost Votes
Mr Kodua acknowledged that the NPP recorded a decline in its electoral performance between the 2020 and 2024 general elections, saying the development highlights the need for the party to review its strategy and rebuild its support base.
He therefore charged the new Ashanti Regional executives to take advantage of the support they currently enjoy and implement effective grassroots mobilisation strategies to increase the NPP’s vote share across the region.
The General Secretary also urged the executives to work harder to maximise votes for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and position the Ashanti Region at the centre of the NPP’s national campaign for the 2028 elections.
NPP Leadership Urged to Maintain Unity
Beyond the 1.5 million vote target, Justin Kodua Frimpong called on the new regional leadership to maintain unity within the NPP and prevent internal divisions from affecting the party’s electoral prospects.
He noted that all 47 constituency executives in the Ashanti Region had expressed support for the newly elected regional administration and encouraged the leadership to build on the unity.
According to him, bringing all party members and executives together will be essential to achieving a strong electoral performance in the 2028 Ghana general elections.
“I’m expecting you to build on this support and bring everyone on board to ensure a resounding victory for NPP in 2028.”
NPP Begins 2028 Election Preparations
The latest directive comes as the NPP begins laying the groundwork for the 2028 general elections, with a renewed focus on strengthening its constituency structures, expanding grassroots mobilisation and consolidating support in its traditional strongholds.
The comments were made during a thanksgiving service at Gracefields Temple-Havillah City Temple at Ahodwo in Kumasi, held under the theme, “A Heart of Gratitude; A Life of Praise.”
The event brought together current and former NPP executives, former ministers, former chief executives of state institutions, and serving and former Members of Parliament.
The thanksgiving service featured prayers, singing and dancing as the newly elected Ashanti Regional NPP executives expressed gratitude following what they described as a successful regional election.
Mr Kodua, who is widely tipped to retain his position as NPP General Secretary, congratulated the new Ashanti Regional leadership and urged them to remain focused on rebuilding the party, strengthening its grassroots structures and preparing for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
