The government’s choice to provide a 5G license contract to NextGen InfraCo, a business that was founded barely a week before the contract was approved, has drawn grave concerns from the minority in parliament.
As per the Minority, the agreement is opaque and does not align with the interests of the nation.
The National Democratic Party members vowed to oppose the agreement in a press release signed by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Monday, June 3.
Their doubts about the NextGen InfraCo deal were bolstered by the statement, which cited previous contracts given by the current administration that have led to a waste of state resources.
The NDC MPs emphasized the importance of oversight and responsibility, promising the people that they will address the country in the upcoming days to clarify the deal’s opacity and any potential ramifications for Ghana.
“The regulatory framework and operational modalities and guidelines for this opaque arrangement have not been clearly defined by the AkufoAddo/Bawumia government, which appears to be in an indecent haste to give away the country’s 5G spectrum for a pittance,” an excerpt of their statement said.
This comes after Minister of Communications and Digitalization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful defended the government’s choice to give NextGen InfraCo the 5G license deal.
The Ablekuma West MP made it clear that the purpose of NextGen InfraCo’s establishment was to oversee the development of 5G. She continued by saying that no other infrastructure firms had the capacity required for this project at the time.
The minister went on to say that the government’s plan to go past past obstacles and hasten the rollout of Ghana’s 5G network includes directly awarding the contract to this new business.
