The University of Cape Coast (UCC) community has been in grief after the discovery of the death of Innocentia Avinu, a female student who had previously been reported missing by her family.
The deceased, a university Level 200 student, was last saw in the Ayensu Plaza Hostel on the UCC campus on June 11, 2026. Family members said that she left the hostel wearing a black dress, but she never came back, raising questions about her whereabouts.
After that, friends and family started a search and asked the public for help finding her. Tragically, though, the hunt came to an end when a body that was eventually identified as hers was discovered washed up close to Cape Coast’s Hutchland Beach Resort.

According to police reports, the body of an unnamed girl, thought to be between 25 and 30 years old, was found on the beach on June 12 at around 3:15 a.m., according to information sent to the UCC District Police Command.
When a group of police officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the victim face down with blood seeping from its nostrils. There were no obvious signs of violence or any exterior injuries, according to a preliminary investigation done at the scene.
After taking pictures, the body was sent to the mortuary at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for identification and autopsy.
Police asked local coastal communities and chief fisherman for information that could help with investigations in an attempt to identify the deceased.
When a family member attended the police station on June 13 and recognised the deceased’s photos as belonging to Innocentia Avinu, the breakthrough occurred.
The body was officially recognised and verified to be that of the missing student at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital mortuary, where the Dean of Students at the University of Cape Coast joined police detectives and family members.
A second examination of the body in the presence of family members, according to the police, revealed no physical wounds or indications of violence.
Since then, as part of continuing investigations, the Central Regional Crime Scene Management Team has examined and processed the scene where the corpse was discovered.
The body is still at the mortuary while an autopsy is performed to ascertain the precise cause of death.
Police have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine the facts surrounding the occurrence, but the circumstances leading up to the student’s death are still unknown.
Students and members of the university community have expressed sorrow and sympathies to the dead family on social media as a result of the unfortunate development.
